Pentyrch Hill Race

This is a race registered as a Grade BM Fell Race with Welsh Athletics and the Fell Running Association of Great Britain, and is the biggest fell race in south Wales. Last year it attracted over 100 athletes and it regularly features Welsh and British fell running internationals.

The race this year, its 20th staging, will take place on Tuesday 25 April at 7 pm. Registration is at the Rugby Club by 6.30 p.m. and the start is from the Village Hall. Details from John Gough, tel: 029 20891721, or E-mail

johngoughpentyrch@btinternet.com.

Please note this race, just over 6.5 miles in length and 1600 feet of climbing, is not for the fun runner, and anyone not used to running in excess of 8 miles on the road should not attempt it.

If you are not running, why not support it by giving the athletes some vocal support? From the top of the Garth, not only will you see athletes tackling the mountain on the outward journey, you can see them traversing the mountain a second time on their return.

Pentyrch Brownies

In December, we went to see ‘Anne’ in the Pentyrch Village Hall with the Brownies. The show was very exciting. The best bit was when Annie came down on Christmas Day and there were lots of presents under the Christmas tree. Annie shared the presents with all the orphans. Our favourite character was the dog because he was cute. We thought Annie was very good at singing.

We did our Crime Prevention Badge last term. We had to do a play and make a poster about crime prevention. Also, Mr Priday came to talk to us about crime prevention. He sent all of our posters to Cardiff Council and they were very kind and sent us Cardiff Community Safety Partnership badges.

At the moment we are working on our First Aid Badge.

PENTYRCH

SHOW

We would first of all like to say a big THANK YOU to all those people who took part in the Pentyrch Show, either as participants or spectators, or both. The Show was a great success, with a good number of attendees. The Show takes place at the beginning of September every year and is a traditional Village Show, celebrating the art, craft and produce of the good people of Pentyrch and surrounding areas, who can pitch their skills against other villagers in a very friendly environment. There are entries for all ages, from under 7 to over 80! For those new to the area, the Show is a nice introduction to Village life, and a good way of making new friends over a cup of tea.

The Show is run by volunteers and is non-profit making, with any monies surplus to the running costs being re-invested in the local charities. The monies raised in 2005 were shared between the Village Hall Car Park Fund (£150) and the Hilltop Theatre Company (£150).

The date for the 2006 Show is Saturday 2nd September and we hope that even more people will come to share in the fun by entering their best produce, baking, needlework, paintings and craft items. Programmes, which are also the entry ticket to the Show, will be on sale later in the year. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

PENTYRCH R.F.C. CHRISTMAS DINNER

What an excellent evening we, who were so privileged to have been invited, had at this party for Senior Citizens.

The evening started with thrilling entertainment by the Creigiau Junior School Choir who sang a lovely medley of festive carols in both Welsh and English, helped or maybe hindered a little by us occasionally, and followed by junior members of the cast of ANNIE, recently performed in the village by the local dramatic society. This was a delightful start to our evening.

A wonderful buffet was then presented with excellent choices, a glass of wine and seasonal desserts with, as an extra treat, a free raffle. Never have I seen such a well-laden table demolished so quickly by a horde of OAP's!!!

The rest of the evening was taken up with entertainment from George Formby, alias Alan Mold, Roger Jones, Rhys Jones and young musicians, Owen, Geraint and Robert and last, but most certainly not least, Howard Richards who really was a star. All of this was admirably compered by Brian Davies, Creigiau.

Sincere thanks to David Rogers, President of Pentyrch Rugby Club, his committee and all the helpers who ensured that a great evening was had by all.

Alan Parsons.
