PENTYRCH W.I.
On the 6th July, the Pentyrch W.I. held an educational theme evening celebrating VE Day. The Village Hall was decorated to replicate a 1945 `Street Party' with bunting and Flags and Members came dressed in appropriate costume. Many Members brought along memorabilia such as Medals awarded to family Members in the lst and 2nd world wars. Some very interesting items were provided by one of our Members, Mrs. Joy Poulson, who was a Member of the FANNY's (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) and had worked as a cryptographer deciphering messages from Members of the resistance in France. Six long time Members who, unfortunately, are unable to attend on a regular basis due to ill-health were invited to the party. After a supper of fish and chips followed by jelly and blancmange, Members were entertained by `The Andrew Sisters', `Flanagan & Allen', `Shirley Temple', `Judy Garland', `Marlene Dietrich', `Vera Lynn', and `Gracie Fields' with all Members joining in the sing-along at the end of the concert. In June we organised a day trip to Evesham and in July enjoyed an evening meal at the Oxwich Hotel on the Gower Coast. We also have a very successful Book Club which meets once a month and have recently organised a Bridge Evening every fortnight which is going from strength to strength. of our Members were also a great success and another one is scheduled for November in time for Members to make their own Christmas Cards. In addition to our evening meetings, we also meet every month in the afternoon. To date, we have toured the Sherman Theatre, the Welsh Assembly and the new Millennium Centre and in June we attended a matinee performance of `High Society' in the New Theatre. In May we visited Cardiff Bay and lunched at the El Puerto Restaurant in the Penarth Marina and in July met for lunch at the Caesars Arms, Creigiau. Our Membership now stands at 74 and new Members are always welcome Jean Bryant, Secretary |

OVER-60's CLUB
As the last meeting of our Summer session was to coincide with the 60th anniversary of VE Day, members were asked to bring along sweet and/or savoury edibles, with a view to assimilating a 1945 street party. It turned out to be a super party, with plenty of goodies to eat (even including the strawberries and cream) and whilst we didn't quite manage to work up the euphoria of those earlier days; we at least experienced some of its nostalgia as various members undertook to recount their more memorable war-time experiences. (Even a touch of romance introduced by the ex-wartime hospital nurse who finished up marrying one of her patients!) A coach trip to Saundersfoot on August 7th was blessed by perfect weather and a great time was had by all The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for our trip to Weston-Super-Mare on the 28th September, when it simply poured with rain all day. Few of us could even have seen the sea at all, as we seemed to keep bumping into one another in M&S; W.H.Smith's; or various of the local fish & chip shops and cafes! Still, everyone seems to have enjoyed it! Patricia Peakman. |

FAREWELL TO CREIGIAU COOKS! On Thursday 20th October 2005, members of staff both past and present gathered to celebrate the retirement of Dee Grocott (Cook) and Jean Phelps (Assistant Cook) at a function held in their honour at Creigiau Primary School hall. They each worked for nearly twenty-five years in the school canteen and during this time they must have served up well over a million meals for all the pupils and staff! We are very grateful for their hard work and commitment over so many years and we wish them both a long and happy retirement. Peter Evans Headteacher |
