CREIGIAU 23

PENTYRCH CHESS CLUB
CLWB GWYDDBWYLL
PEN-TYRCH

Both Pentyrch teams had a very successful season, with the first team winning Division 3 of the East Glamorgan Chess League by a huge margin. They will play in Division 2 next season. The second team, captained by Richard Morgan, also won promotion from Division 4 to Division 3. All members of the club contributed significantly to the successful challenge for promotion made by both teams during the season. One member of our first team was the only player in the League to achieve a 100% record by winning all the games he played this season for that team, while one of our second team players scored over 80%.
Last year we were grateful recipients of a significant grant from the Pentyrch Open Gardens with which we purchased new equipment, for which we extend our thanks to the donors. That has proved to be a great asset to the club and has already seen good use.
A new member this year was someone who played for the Welsh Chess Team a number of years ago. He has already given a brief talk to the club on preparing for tournament play and we hope he will offer to speak on aspects of the game which will help us to develop and improve.
We continue to be grateful to the Kings Arms for use of what is, beyond doubt, one of the most welcoming venues in the East Glamorgan area.
We do have players of varying strengths and welcome new members of all abilities. Anyone interested in joining the club should contact the secretary, Viv Martin (20891402) or the club captain, Geof Tyrrell (20891381). Club meetings are held on Monday nights at the Kings Arms at 7.30.

Creigiau 23 (so called because of the 23 founding members) is a group formed in Creigiau in 1970 to 'promote fellowship amongst the men of the village'. We are a group of a maximum of 55 members (all of whom live or have lived in the village) and there is usually a short waiting list to join. We have no affiliation to any other organisation.
Through our monthly dinner meetings at Creigiau Golf Club and various other social functions we raise funds to support primarily other organisations in the village as well as some national charities chosen by our guest speakers. In addition to helping organise the annual Creigiau Carnival, we also organise the annual Boxing Day walk and other Christmas festivities. This year, in association with Friends of Creigiau School, we held a Summer Ball in early July at The Vale Of Glamorgan Hotel.
The following organisations have been supported by Creigiau 23 in recent years:
Creigiau Brownies, Creigiau Netball, Creigiau Companions, 1st Creigiau Scouts, 1st Creigiau Guides, Friends of Creigiau School, Creigiau Tots, Creigiau Cub Pack, Cylch Meithrin Creigiau, Creigiau Ti a Fi

Pentyrch Horticultural Show
Saturday September 6th 2003

The committee would like to thank everyone who helped, attended and participated at this year. The show was again a success with more entries in the vegetable and fruit sections than for some years. Cookery entries were slightly disappointing however, but it seems that the show could not compete with a Bowls competition!!!
Everyone who came seemed to enjoy it and hopefully many people will think - "I could have a go at that", and thereby increase next year's entries. A date for your diaries - September 4th 2004 - We look forward to seeing you there.

Hilltop Theatre

Best wishes to Hilltop Theatre and their production of 'Allo 'Allo on 19--22 November in Pentyrch Village Hall.
