OPENING OF THE
GARTH VIEWING PLATFORM

The evening of May Day Bank holiday, May 5th, was the day chosen to officially unveil the viewing platform, on the Garth.
It had been planned for many years and was decided on as something to mark the Centenary celebrations.  Many visits to the site by the clerk and the company who submitted the final design took place before the platform was completed.
The event had been publicised in the Community Link magazine and through leaflets to the schools.  About a hundred people made it on the night, including five very game senior citizens.  A last minute call to Nicky Lyons who organised their transport by Landrover and a request to have access from Garth Uchaf Farm from Elwyn & Sue Williams, enabled them to join in. All Pentyrch Community councillors and two from Creigiau, as well as the Brownies and several other organisations were represented.
It was a perfectly clear evening, with the sun shining, although the wind was quite keen. The views up the channel to both Severn crossings and out across Cardiff Bay, as well as north towards Brecon, were quite spectacular.  The Rev. John Binny who gave a short address was amazed to see the view so clearly.
The Chairman Penri Williams a read poem in Welsh by Rhys Dafis and Don Llewellyn gave a short history talk on the Garth Mountain.
William Fry helped Mrs Gwladys Berry to unveil the plaque. She said

Angela Ashley,  May Fry, Gwladys Berry, Gill Rees, Don Llewellyn,
Penri Williams a Carole Willis

Dadorchuddio Wylfa

Ar ddydd Llun Calan Mai dadorchuddiwyd gwylfan newydd ar ben y Garth gan Gwladys Berry, un o drigolion hynaf Pentyrch a'r Cynghorydd Penri Williams, Cadeirydd Cyngor Cymuned Pentyrch. Gosodwyd yr wylfan i ddangos nifer o'r prif nodweddion sydd i'w gweld o'r mynydd uchaf yn Ninas Caerdydd.
Cafwyd anerchiad gan Don Llewellyn ar hanes Mynydd y Garth a gweddi gan y Ficer, y Parch John Binny.
Darllenwyd englyn gan Rhys Dafis oedd yn crynhoi yr awyrgylch arbennig a gafwyd ar ddiwedd diwrnod bendigedig o glir a heulog.

Y Mynydd

Mae enaid angen munud - o afael
Y dref, ac mae gwynfyd
Fry yn bell o ferw'n byd
Yn hedd mynydd am ennyd.

Rhys Dafis. Creigiau

the last time she had been to the top of the Garth was 1990.
It was quite cold as we descended the mountain but it had been all worthwhile.  Thank you to all who came and to all who helped to make the evening special.

The Mountain

Life needs a minute - of leaving
The town, to the bliss above
     Far from the seething world
In the peace of the mountain for a moment
