Mountain Muse

Towering 1,000 feet above sea level and dominating the village, it beckons seductively drawing people of a certain inclination to have a love affair with it- to wander and wonder and sometimes to see ghosts.
Up one goes past the quaint white cottage with its endearing cats and kittens sunning themselves outside and eyeing you warily.
Occasional mountain bikers sweat their way energetically and joggers with strained faces puff and blow.
But the walkers own the great expanse and feel its healing powers. They are drawn here daily by their obsession with it. Friends meet and understand.
Horses leave lucky footprints in the soft earth telling tales of canters along the ridge. The sweet smell of their dung assails the nostrils.
In spring the ferns hide nesting skylarks. They soar upwards singing haunting cadences taking your spirit with them.
Sheep bleet to their lambs as they come to feed, flagwaving their tails-a happy sound. But a few steps along I sicken as I encounter a dead lamb with its mother standing guard over it.
For the bird watchers, sparrow hawks, buzzards and kestrels are a frequent sight and sometimes there is serendipity in the form of a snipe, raven, wheatear, reed bunting or stonechat.
The observation post stands at the peak and from here you can see for miles around. The Bristol Channel, Somerset and North Devon are visible to the south, the new Severn Bridge to the east and the Brecon Beacons rolling in the distance to the north. Other mountains loom and afford roads which wind evocatively to the valley towns and looking down one sees Pentyrch, a toy town now with its seemingly miniature

houses.
The moody brooding mountain fascinates in all its guises particularly when viewed from below and the mists claim it and grudgingly return it.
