PENTYRCH DARBY AND JOAN

Our Coast Coach-Tour Drive on l3th September was a great success despite inclement weather later in the day. Members were delighted that our president Mrs Jenny Elms, supported by her husband Richard, was able, with courage, to join the party following her recent stay in hospital. We met on a fine morning and proceeded to Penarth where, on our first stop, we had a break for coffee and biscuits arranged by organiser Mrs Clarice Phillips. We then left for our main destination Porthcawl and the rains which accompanied us were really considered to be `showers of blessings' for they did not dampen our enjoyment of the lovely journey in any way.
After lunch at Porthcawl, the weather became even worse with a fierce thunderstorm threatening to spoil our day. However, with members meeting with old acquaintances, a spirit of friendship ruled the proceedings. Dolly's grandson, who now resides in that area, kindly took four guests to his home, and Ron Beer met up with an old friend. Another group were welcomed by Mr and Mrs Ken Gill, formerly of Pentyrch. Between the storms there was some bright weather and on the evening journey home, the sun smiled on us again to put the seal what had been a happy time. We learned on our return that it had been fine all day in Pentyrch.
On 20th September, members and guests gathered at the Rowan Tree which had been planted alongside the Village Hall as part of the millennium celebrations. Together with Mrs Yvonne Krip the Clerk to the Council, several councillors and members of the editorial board of Community Link were present. Mrs Howard Jones came on behalf o
f the WRVS, whilst the Pentyrch Open Gardens Group which had donated £150 towards the tree, was represented by Mrs R Farrance. A service together with a commemorative blessing of the plaque was conducted by the Vicar of Pentyrch Graham Holcombe who gave a very moving address which

Mrs Elms and the Vicar, Rev Holcombe, at the blessing of the Millenium Tree

included prayers for victims of the atrocity of 1lth September in New York. The essence of his discourse was a plea for the greatest degree of understanding combined with the smallest degree of force that would be compatible with the survival of the good things that we wish to preserve. All then returned to the hall for a tea-party prepared by the members.
The Harvest Festival held on 4th October was well attended. Mrs Elms introduced the Vicar who led a service and hymn singing of thanksgiving. Out of the proceeds from the sale of produce which had

been given, a donation was made to the Ministry.
On 18th October we were pleased to welcome Mrs Brigit Llewellyn who gave a demonstration of Parchment Craft and gave tuition to the members. Mrs Llewellyn brought with her a magnificent display of this artistic work which was much admired by those present. The afternoon was made even more enjoyable for the members by their creditable efforts to produce examples themselves of the craft. A warm vote of thanks was given on behalf of the Darby and Joan by member Janet Jones.
