Gwaelod y Garth O.A.P. Association
Members meet on Wednesdays, once a fortnight at 2.30pm in the Village Hall and spend a lively and entertaining afternoon. Members present vary up to a maximum of 28 and enjoy either an interesting speaker, a quiz or occasionally just a lively gossip, mainly about old times. One of the highlights of the past few months has been the visit of the Celtica Duo, two very talented and charming young people. Eleri Darkins, who played the harp and Gwenllian Davies, the oboe. They came as members of Live Music Now! Wales founded by Yehudi Menuhin and directed in Wales by Gillian Green to bring music to the people, particularly the sick and the older generation. They played a delightful selection of music from Handel to popular, light music and finished to a warm applause with a selection of Welsh melodies. Another highlight was the visit of the actress Jane Manuel who has raised a total of £12,000 for charity with her annual amateur stage shows which have had such success that they had graduated from the Penarth Theatre to St. David's Hall. Such visitors, annual outings and a lot of laughter make our small association a great success and we would give a warm welcome to new members.

Cylch Meithrin Gwaelod-y-Garth would like to welcome our Children and Parents to the new team. Yvonne Stephenson (leader) Lynda Civil and Carol Morgan (assistants) offer Nursery education through the medium of Welsh for children aged 2½ to primary school age. The Meithrin is based at Bethlehem Capel Gwaelod-y-Garth and is registered with the Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin (National Association of Welsh Medium Nursery Schools and Playgroups). We open our doors at 9.15am till l2am Monday to Friday and 12.45pm till 3.15pm Wednesday. Each session is structured to offer children the very best environment to develop their creative, physical and social skills through play, music and art. As well as the Meithrin, we run a Cylch Ti a Fi for any Mums and Toddlers who want to come. You don't have to have a child at the Meithrin to join in, just come along on Thursday afternoons between 1.30pm and 3.15pm.

Apart from a small grant from the Mudiad, we have to raise our own funds and sessions cost £4.50 per child ( Ti a Fi is only £1.00 per session ) We are planning to boost our meagre budget with some good old-fashioned fund raising so look out! First on our agenda is a Twmpath (Welsh folk dance) some time in November. Currently we still have a few limited places left. If any Parents are still looking for Welsh Medium Nursery education please contact Mrs Ali Torkington on 02920 811147. Every term we will be holding parents meetings to give you a chance to get involved with your children's education and meet other parents. We will keep you informed through the monthly newsletter written by Yvonne. If anybody would like to know any more about us, Welsh Medium Education or anything else please don't hesitate to contact us. Ali Torkington 02920 811147. Liz Miller-Royal 02920 337371.
